Hoping the experts can chime in here. I have an 84 175Evinrude that I am going to swap out however it has a 20 inch shaft. I am looking to repower but the problem I am running in to is that eery motor I come across between a 150-200 is a 25 inch shaft. Can I use a 25 inch? I don't want to get stuck if I buy a motor with a 25 inch shaft.

Re: Transom size?

You can use a 25" motor. Just use a simple manual jackplate. Something like a Bob's Machine 4 in 1 with 5-6" setback. Depending on what boat it is, 6" of setback will be more than enough. Bob's convertable will bolt together so you only have 2 1/2" if you like. Check your cable lengths to make sure you have enough to up 5" and back some.

I appreciate the insight. I have a 19-6 dual console Aquasport that I am trying to get ready for the upcoming season. I am going to look in to the jackplate now.

Seen that combo many times. It works well. In fact some folks do that so they can fill in a bit of the transom (stops water from coming in) without replacing the whole thing and redrilling holes.

A 19-6 will work well at anything up to 6" of setback. I think they start to porpoise at more set back. The Bob's will work nicely but there are others too.
