Well after pouring through here and reading tons of posts(awesome advive and info for other noobs to site btw) I finally pullis the 65 hp evinrude off back and started the demo. I have a few questions after seein a few things after starting. I noticed when I started gettin rdy to pull cap the the cap is auctually glasses on with what appears to be 3 or 4" tape, when reinstalling the cap should I put glass back on it? Drilling the rivets was funny 3 different sizes of rivets holding rubrail and cap on, thinking I might screrw it back on due to the fact no rivet gun. I'm searchin for the cable to get pics off the camera to post so any suggestions on screwin cap back on glassing it down? Thank for all the info I've picked up

forgot one question though, sense I work alot during wwekdays I'll be doing the transom than the stringers should I just cut enough of the stringer off the transom I need to cut the innere sheet of glass and wood out and leave the rest of the stringers in place till I get to that or cut it all out and just leave a strap around the boat?

Re: Transom & stringers project in full swing

When putting the hull and the cap back together I personally recommend sealant between the halves and rivets. Here's why I don't use screws, take 2 2x4's and screw them together with a small gap in between. Notice that the 2x4's will not pull together and close the gap? Same happens with the fiberglass. A screw will even push the 2nd layer of glass away. Rivets will pull the 2 halves together. Smear sealant over the rivets after. As far as laying a strip of glass over it again isn't necessary.
To answer your 2nd post just remove all that needs to be. I see you just want to get the glassing started. It's going to take the same amount of hours no matter how you cut it. I'd just get all the prep work out of the way.
Good luck and keep us posted. :)

screws tend to work loose on boats, even with wood backing.
Thru bolts with backing plates, washers and nuts are the best way, but the cap ought to go back the way it came off, glass tape makes it solid again.

I would vote for rivets and 5200 or 4200.

My Glastron was put together with a furring strip riveted to the hull, then the cap was screwed to the hull with a foam strip in between them. All stainless of course.

Anyway you decide to do it, make sure you seal the seam between the cap and hull, or you will end up with water in the boat, particularly around the rear of the boat.

Thanx gonna look into grabbing a rivet gun. Oh i swear by the power of 5200 ran a longline boat for 5 years and sometimes I swear that was what was holding the ole girl together. Getting the cap off proved to be quiet the challenge not the good ole pop off I read some had. Well still searvhing high and low for cable to get pics off camera but will post them when i get'em
