I have a 1989 Lund Deluxe 16ft boat that is seems to be in great condition structurally. On the limit sticker it states 40hp max. My question is the 40 hp max a limit based on weight or thrust? I have a 25hp Bigfoot 4 stroke (180pds) on there right now that probably out weighs most 40hp 2-strokes. The reason I ask is I am adding a CMC PT-130 (weighs 52pds), and was wondering with the combined weight of the 25hp motor and CMC, will that be to much weight for my transom? Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

I tried attaching a picture of the back, hope it worked.

Re: Transom weight question.

the boat will handle the weight. the main question, is what is 52 lbs, going to do the water line. when stopped. put the boat in the water, add 50 lbs, to the stern of the boat. is the free board on the transom, enough for you to be comfortable. looks like you do not have a splash well. that could be remedied, by putting a panel across in front of that brace, or put some back troll panels on the transom, this would limit the amount of splash over, and good bilge automatic bilge pump.

Re: Transom weight question.

i have a 1989 lund rebel that i think is the same hull as your dlx. i have the side console with the live well on the other side. flat floor with 3 pedestal seats. i have a Honda 30hp that weighs 152lbs. i put the PT-130 on my boat and it shifted the balance point a little. i have had no problem with the transom flexing or showing any problems after 3 yrs so i think the transom is fine to handle the weight. but i do think the extra 52lbs would have been more of a factor on a tiller boat as far as balance or sitting level in the water. you will be able to trim it when you are running WOT and be level on plane. if you troll alot like i do by yourself you might have a little problem with the bow blowing sidways in the wind a little more. just move a litttle more weight forward. for every down side it might have the powerT&T out weighs all the problems. i would get a different motor rather than go back to horsing it up and down by hand. the other thing you will need to look at is the set back. i assume your tiller is long enough that moving the motor back 4-5 in will not be a problem. you will find that your steering will be different with the motor set back. i don't think it is better or worse just different. installation was easy. i just slid the motor to the side, set the unit on the transom, drilled the holes and bolted it on. i had the plate so i could just clamp the motor on but i bolted it just for extra safety. i would say with wiring to the console, mounting , sealing holes and ect it took about 3 hours on a sunday afternoon. not counting the 2 hrs admiring my work and playing with it, what can i say, it was bright and shiney and i am easily entertained.

Re: Transom weight question.

Thank you for answering my question. I had back surgery and that is just to much weight to lift.

marquette - I will be installing the CMC in the spring, hopefully it will go as easy as yours did. :D Did you have any problems with your clamps hitting when being tilted up? BTW, you only admired for 2 hrs.......:D

Thanks, I may have to contact you again when I am installing.
