I need to "beef up" my existing transom to support a larger OB engine. The boat is a 1990 1700 series16' Bayliner Capri. It currently has a 65hp and I'm looking to upgrade to a newer 80hp. All advise and comments welcome. I hope everyone had a great new years!

Re: Transome Re-inforcement

That boat's already rated for 85hp. The only reason you'd have to beef it up is if it's rotted. In that case you'll need to rebuild the transom.

Re: Transome Re-inforcement

The Coast Guard Decal on the boat says it's only rated for 50hp??

It is really a matter of extra weight in the stearn and extra torque right??

Lawayers love guys who put 80 ponies on the transom of a boat rated for 50 - - oh and forget your insurance company. They will deny ever having you for a policy holder.

Re: Transome Re-inforcement

You have already exceeded the 50 hp rating on a 17 year old hull. Be very cautious and inspect the transom and stringer's for rot (I once heard a rumor that in 1990 Bayliner's it was common).

IMO if you have a good running 80hp do the job right from the start. Just "beefing up" only works if done the right way.

Re: Transome Re-inforcement

Well gentlemen, I heeded your advise and had the transom check for rot, and was pleasently suprised to find none. Also I purchased a 50hp 2-stroke with hydroplanes and am having it installed in the place of the 65hp. Thanks for the advise/help.

Re: Transome Re-inforcement

I did a similar projet 2 years ago. I had dual engine/outdrive in my '74 fiberform and replaced them with a 225 E-tec (outboard). After in-filling the transom and mounting an off-shore bracket, I mounted ppt 2x4's on inside of transom and used the bolts of the off shore bracket to hold them in place, and then bolted a "triangle" support perpendicular to transom and directly into stringers. When I power up there is no flex or delay. The forces are transferred directly into stringers. The e-tec is positioned 29" back of transom and at 524 lbs it does create a moment arm...I have used this for over 50 hours in PWS and it is very solid.
