If I don't use marine grade plywood for the floor, would treated be ok, or another cheaper and readily accessible plywood? (marine grade plywood is 2 weeks away) I intend to coat the underside of the plywood with resin before I lay it out.

I heard that treated wood will damage aluminum, dont use treated if the hull is aluminum.

Re: Treated plywood for flooring?

The problem with treated plywood for boat building is that it has a high moisture content from the chemical solution they use to treat it. It needs to be a kiln dried treated plywood, especially if you're going to apply anything to it like resin or glue.

The standard grade exterior treated plywood will also have quite a few voids inbetween the plies.

You would probably be better off to go with the kiln dried CDX plywood, it'll have just as many voids but will be dry for your resin application.

This is what happens when you apply resin or glass over PT that hasn't been kiln dried.

Your resin won't absorb into the wood, will probably turn milky, won't setup, and you'll have a mess.

i used ACX fir on a project i did about 7-8 years ago. i precoated with resin before i glassed anything (to be sure it adhered properly). i coated the underside and edges with thinned resin and i've had no problems at all so far. no delamination or rot.

I'd recommend Underlayment Plywood. 100% Waterproof Glue used in the plys. Very few voids. Good stuff. Or for decks MDO NOT MDF is a GREAT product and Saves a lot of money on resin. No need to precoat sinces it is already resin coated on both sides.

Have you looked at the Rot Doctor products? I've replaced floors with CDX treated with their products with very good results. Google them and check it out.

MDO is great plywood, HDO is even better!

... but, alas... most people don't want to pay the premium price for these products and will try to squeek by a cheaply as possible, and that's the main reason I don't even mention them.
