I just bought a boat that I think is an open bow tri hull.. I now understand that there are also modified tri hulls etc.. How can I tell the difference & what I have, a tri hull or modified... what are the pro & cons of either.. i always thought a tri hull is supposed to be more stable on the water, like walking in it rather than a V boat. is this correct. Oh & I haven't had my boat in the water yet, waiting for the weather to clear..

Re: Tri hull vs modified tri hull

Tri hulls have 3 equal looking bow angles. Modified tri hulls have a center bow that protrudes farther into the water. Modified tri hulls usually are faired into a single vee hull as they go astern. This is true of some tri hulls but not all of them. Some have flat bottoms behind the tri hull forward section.

Re: Tri hull vs modified tri hull

My trihull has a good vee at the stearn, see the avatar and a predominate center vee at the bow.

Does reasonably well in a chop and is stable at anchor.
