"Trick" to disassembling Steering Wheel Hub?

I'm trying to replace the existing 9-bolt steering wheel with a 1-bolt Uflex. From the looks of it, there is still the old steering wheel's adapter:

I loosened the main bolt and a single, smaller screw on the bottom of the column. The assembly didn't quite want to let go. Is there something I'm overlooking?

Ayuh,... The center nut is on a tapered shaft...
Put the wheel back on, brace it with yer knees, pushin' Off, 'n with the nut flush with the shaft,...
WACK the center nut with a hammer...

1 Good WACK, 'n it'll Pop off...

Can't wack the center nut with the wheel back on. Did you mean to say take the center nut off and then reattach the steering wheel? And then just pull on the wheel?

What Bond-o meant was to reattach the old steering wheel , loosen the center nut until it is above the center threads. Then what most of us do, is get our knees behind the steering wheel pushing away from the dash. Once you've got some serious pressure going, whack the center nut HARD. One good shot should cause the assembly to pop loos of the taper, just remove the nut and swap steering wheels.
