While cleaning the carbs on my new to me '84 50hp (I think it's an '84) I noticed that one of the four wires coming from trigger assembly to the switch box had been repaired, but broken again. Upon further inspection I found that the wire in question had been subject to high current at some point, or so it looked: fatigued insulation and oxidized conductors.

However, as the wire disappears into the trigger assembly, it is acceptably firm, adn I think would support a soldered repair with a new wire. I am showing very limited continuity between the wire in question, which is tan in color, with the brown wire. I think it's showing about 12k ohms. There is no continuity between the tan wire and either the purple or the white. I have removed the trigger assembly from the engine.

The part number on the trigger assembly is 96451

I see that new trigger assemblies are available, but I'm not anxious to spend the bux w/o knowing two things, mostly because I'm not anxious to fry a new one if the issue lies elsewhere.

1) what resistance should I expect to find between the tan and brown wires?

2) Anyone willing to hazard a guess as to what might have occasioned high current through the tan wire with no attending high current symptoms on any other wire.

BTW, I have inspectd the tan wire for inadvertant grounding and find none.

Thanks for any help, and before you recommend a FSM, I have one ordered, having given away my old one with a similar motor I once owned.

Lastly, I have not run this engine so symptoms are unknown at this point.
