Trigger?

Good afternoon gentlemen,
I have a 2003 Mercury 60hp bigfoot 2-cycle. It has a dead miss on the number two cylinder. I tested it with my spark tester and it is not firing at all. My first thought was the ignition coil. To check this I unplugged the wiring from the number 1 cylinders coil and plugged it into the number 2 coil. The plug started firing then. I then did the same thing in the wiring going to the trigger. I swapped around the number 2 and number 3 cylinder wiring coming from the trigger and number 2 started firing again. But hooked up correctly it will not fire. Now does this tell me that the trigger is bad? I have never had to replace a trigger on anything before, so Im a bit skeptical. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Trigger?

Your engine is CDM and thats not the way to test them if the engine does not fire on one cyl the problem is a CDM unit on another cyl heres the test from CDI.

Re: Trigger?

I sure appreciate that. I performed the tests described and even swapped all the CDMs around and the miss stays with the #2 cylinder no matter what I do. So what does this tell me?

Thanks again,
Tony

Re: Trigger?

I agree that the trigger may be the culprit.

I would test each trigger output using a DVA Meter to verify before spending $$$$$ just to be certain.

Re: Trigger?

Thanks,
I only have a MAC tools digital multimeter, and if Im not mistaken it wont read fluctuating readings. Correct? I can get my hands on the trigger and swap it. If it doesnt repair the miss, I can take it back and get my money back. It helps to know the right people...lol

Thanks Again,
Tony
