trim and tach not gauge working

(89' evinrude 150 xp)How does a man check the trim gauge. i bough a new one and it is doing the same thing. the manual tells me to check the this wire to this wire but i cant read wire diagrams. Next is my tach it hasent worked at all it goes to 1100rpms on the turn of the key (before the motor is started) and does not move from there. i have checked the ground and ignition wire on both i think it has some thing to do with the signal wire on both. oh and on the trim gauge i ran a new wire from the box on the motor to the signal port and still nothing.
