Hi all, hope someone can help! I took on water (about to the mid calf at the back of the boat) My engine never quit working. However after this my tilt and trim don't work. I can here a clicking noise when i try to operate the tilt or trim. I replaced the four celenoids and still have the same click. Both moters run when bypassed. I have think i hava a 1986, 2.5 litre OMC(gm) engine (boat is 1986)and an OMC stern drive with the rubber boot around it, in a 1986 starcraft. The model number is 252sthrcra and model J315442, it says on the top of the engine 2.5 liter. Hope these corrections make it easier. I have looked for fuses or other connection. My trim switch is in the throttle handle, tilt is on the dash. The trim is in the front of the engine tilt in the rear. Thank you for any help. Jerry

OMC Didnt use a 2.5 in 86.Whatcha workin on a stringer or a cobra... 2.3 if its a cobra. In 1986 they were all cobras.

Re: Trim and tilt problem

I am currently having the same problem. My outdrive would only go down and not up( alpha one). When I pressed the button I would get a clicking sound so I replaced the solenoid and it seemed to work for a while but then completely quit on me.
To test if its the solenoid or the actual pump I would try to run a wire from the possitive terminal of the battery to the pump itself.... bypassing the solenoid. If i remember correctly the wires on the pump are as follows ( mine anyway) green is for trim down, blue is for trim up, black is ground. If running this wire from the battery to the pump still results in a click or nothing then the pump could be bad, if it works ...it may be the solonoid???.

Re: Trim and tilt problem

Hello all! Just a little more insight to tilt and trim troubles. Make sure that your battery has a good charge on it. Otherwise the solinoids will click and the motor will not turn. it takes quite a bit of amps to turn that motor when it is at rest, even more so when triming up or when it's cold outside (oil will tend to be a bit thicker)ever have the car battery go almost dead and try to start the car? You just hear the solinoid clicking away but that starter just won't turn! Just another point with trim systems. :)

Re: Trim and tilt problem

Jerry
Motor you described is a OMC Stringer. MY guess is a 120HP serries 400. That motor and outdrive was made up to 85. It is not a 1986 or it would be a cobra.

Your motor has the big rubber boot. Trim and tilt are two seperate systems. The trim is done by raising the front of the motor. Tilt is done with a seperate motor on the port side and a 1/4 circle gear outside.

This motor has two 50 amp fuses and one of them runs both motor. Both of the fuses are on the starboard side of the motor right near the starter. They look more like a connector block than a fuse. If the solenoid clicks the contacts will make but if the fuse is blown there will be no power to either motor.

Many things can cause the motor not to work but really only two thing common. The power coming from the big 50 amp fuse or if the water shorted out both motors.

Good luck.

Hellop
most of the 4 bangers only had a tilt function. if you had water in the bilge shin deep odds are you filled the motor with water. time to test all the solinoid circuits then if nessasary remove the tilt motor for repairs.
buy a service manual and read and understand how it works before wrenching. good luck and keep posting
