I have a 96 evinrude 200. I bought this boat knowing it needed a few repairs. I replaced the trim motor and it works great when not in the water. When it's in the water it will not trim down. I can reverse the wires and make it trim down. What could be going on?

Howdy, while this is an electrical issue, its an Evinrude problem and should be in the rude area GA_Boater

Your saying it will trim up and down when out of the water but not when in, correct?

Did you only replace the motor, and not any other component?

no the trim motor doesn't resond with either control switch to down, only up. I had to reverse to wires so i could get it to go down and get it off the lake. the only reason i replaced thee trim motor is becuase it had holes rusted in the housing. Neither switch [on the motor or the shift] will do anything but trim up in the water. Could it be a bad ground the would cuase this issue because like i've said it works perfect on dry land.

It's been along time since I chased a trim issue on a v-6. I cant recall how the TNT is necessarily set up. I believe I am correct. The following basics are valid at least.

Take the cowel off. Have someone depress the down button. Do you hear a click? If so:

I believe that motor has two relays for the T-n-T. Swap their positions..if you now have down only replace relays.

If no change or no click heard:
isolate the trim switches by unplugging the red, blue, and green wires and take an ohm reading between red and green with the down button pressed. These are probably in a triangle shaped deutch connector near the cowel switch for the motor switch and at the end of the harness where the other connectors are for the remote switch. I could be wrong on that though, it's been awhile since I chased an issue on a v-6. It also may be simple bullet connectors by the engine switch.

Sometimes a replacement power trim motor is a 2 wire one, when you originally had a 3 wire power trim pump. If so, you need to replace the solenoids with relays to make it work.

So, compare the wires on the old and new trim pump motors. A three wire motor will have blue, green and black. A 2 wire trim pump motor will have blue and green wires only.
