Mercury 1350 (1971)

1) I am preparing to replace the 3/4" piston seals (got the Alpha crankshaft one that supposedly fits) on both my cylinders. I removed the cyl. from the motor and mount. I have found a pin/spanner wrench and it should be here tomorrow. I am looking for an owners manual but dont have one yet. With that being said, I bled the cylinders and I am preparing to open the cylinder. Once opened, I am assuming that I will be able to remove the piston from the collar by removing the top portion, then slide it out, replace the o-ring and reinstall. Can anyone give me any pointers to ease my mind........Also, assuming that this works, what is the proper refill proceedure? Do I keep filling the pump, run up&down and keep filling?

2) Based upon a discussion in a previous post, someone was concerned when I mentioned my trim / tilt control setup. The set-up I have came with the boat purchased 2 years ago. Supposedly the boat and motor are original (Glastron / Mercury). I do not see any evidence that there was another TT control mounted on the dash, side panel or throttle housing.

Here is what I have:

Here is what I understand to be a 1971 trim/tilt control:

The motor trims up and down (before I blew the seal) but I dont know if I am missing additional function.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance.....Bill G

Re: Trim cylinder question and control question

Gidds, After you open the cylinder with the spanner, the rod, piston and cylinder liner can come out. The rod unscrews from the piston with a 9/16" socket. Leave the piston in the cylinder liner, if the piston seal is good. It takes a special tool to reinstall it. The Oring that seals the rod is the same as the Alpha 1 driveshaft oring, and the oring that seals your driveshaft (I think you have one). You can get them individually from MerCruiser.

I did not know that Aplha rods would fit. I thought they would be too long. After assembly the cylinders must be bled thru the two SS phillips head screws on each cylinder. One is on top next to the grease fitting, the other next to where the hoses attach. Each must be up to allow air to escape via gravity, and running the pump. The pump itself is self-bleeding.

Chris.....Thanks for the input......I do have the o-rings from the Alpha but not the rods......hopefully the original ones I have are good, they seem to be in good shape from the exposed part.
