Not only did I find a broken hose on my outdrive (see previous post)one of the cylinders has a leak. Now I not only have to replace the hose but I need to replace the cylinder. Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these? I found a "kit" online. For the price of this kit and 2 hoses it will probably be less that $100! Anybody have any experience with something like this?

Re: Trim Cylinder Rebuild

Tony, I suspect my Merc Outboard trim cylinders are similar to the mercruiser. If so, a special tool is needed to install the piston into the cylinder (AKA inner tube). Luckily, the piston will unbolt from the rod, so it does not have to be removed from the inner tube.

Specifically, after you remove the end cap on the cylinder, pull out the inner tube, with the piston still installed. Then unbolt the piston from the rod, leaving it in the inner tube. Now you can replace the end cap, and other components contained in the rebuild kit.

All in all it sounds like you can save some $$ with these kits.

PS it is a matter of some small amount of time until i have the "pleasure" of rebuilding my Mercruiser T/T cylinders.
