trim difficulties

was planning on pulling the prop off of a 92 40 hp johnson outboard this week-end.

got in the boat, hit the button to raise the trim and nothing happens

down trim wants to work, makes noise when you try to lower, but it is already as far down as it goes

so is there an easy way to clean the contacts on the trim switch without completely taking the unit apart?

is there a way (easy way) to disengage, or bypass, the lift on the motor so I can try to simply pull the lower unit myself.

this has been one of several pleasures of taking on the responsibility of getting an older pontoon boat operational

boat is in the water now, and lake level is up, so anything I do will be from the dock or boat itself

thanks in advance

Re: trim difficulties

sounds like a relay. new relays are dirt cheap. $2 to $5 each. The 5pin NC bosch headlight relay is a universal part used for motors, stereos, alarms, and almost any other 15-30Amp 12v application. Car stereo and alarm installers use them by the boatload.

For evinrude/johnson you need to find the ones with removable locking tab and a bead of glue around base. It won't fit into your relay box with a locking tab and the glue helps keep out moisture. Try a local auto stereo installer first. If you don't have any local shops, then try ebay. But ebay shipping will cost more than the relays. Heck, just a shipping label costs more than a relay. These things are stamped out by the millions.

Re: trim difficulties

follow trim motors wires back through transom clamps until you find a black box.
