Last year I bought a new 2009 4-stroke 200 HP Yamaha. My boat is a Yamaha-pre-rigged Campion 602 SC 21 ft walk-around cuddy. The guys at the Campion factory installed a full set of Faria analogue gauges including a trim gauge. Campion's factory wring harness has 2 wires at the transom for connecting to the trim gauge. They say that the Campion brown/white trim gauge wire goes to the pink wire coming off the F200's trim sender and the their black wire connects to the trim sender's black wire. However, my Yamaha dealer refused to connect up the Faria trim gauge saying that I need a new Yamaha analogue trim gauge (#6Y7836705000) installed in the dash and a wiring harness (#6Y583553N000) to run from the dash to the motor, to the tune of $300.00. Campion insists this is not necessary and that the Faria gauge will work if it's connected. I have located the trim sender and it's pink and black wires under the cowl, but they end in a four-prong connector that it is plugged into another connector under the cowl. I have several questions:
1) Am I being taken for a ride by my dealer?
2) My Yamaha 2009 F200 factory shop manual's wiring diagrams do not show anything under the cowl that the trim sender should be connected to. Campion insists they did not add anything to the Yamaha Control's wiring harness that the trim sender could be connected to. What the heck is it connected to?
3) Do I dare disconnect the trim sender connector? I want to cut off the Yamaha connector and connect the trim sender's pink and black wires with crimp-on butt connectors to the Campion wiring harness as per their instructions but I don't want to do any damage to the engine or its costly ECM (ie computer).
Thanks.
