trim gauge

I want to install a trim gauge on my 88 Bayliner 3.0 I/O. I bought the boat used and there was a trim gauge in a box but not installed. When I installed it the gauge would move all the way to trim up regardless of where the lower unit was. I checked the wiring and matched to the directions. There is a trim sending unit and it was putting out the proper voltage on a meter. Could it be that there has to be a specific gauge in order for it to work?

Re: trim gauge

There should be no voltage on the Cobra trim sender, it's just a variable resistor to ground that feeds the gauge. The proper test for it is to use an ohm meter, unplug the cable just behind the engine and meter it for approx 10 ohms in the down position and 170 in the up. If the boat is on a trailer you can reach in and move the sender arm manually. If this was a new gauge it's possible it's the wrong one, check it to see what it says for the sender resistance.
