I have a 1996 Nitro 884 with a 1996 Mercury 150 EFI. Last year the trim started to occasionally go up on it's own. It happens in the yard on the trailer while not running, on the water when not running and also when it is running at full speed. The only way I can get it to stop is by using the down switch on the cowel. It also has switches on the throttle and bow, these both work but not when it goes crazy on its own, only the cowel switch will override it. It has happened out of the blue while on the trailer and the trim motor runs until the battery dies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's time to re-wire and change out some switches. Your wires are either shot, shorted or just suffering from the elements.

Do not use cheap wire and only use solder for your connections.

Re: Trim goes up randomly without using switch

The usual culprit is the bow switch. Rain water gets in and puddles inside. Corrosion builds til it completes the circuit. It goes up because when you toggle up, the lever pivots and the other end goes down. So the trim up connection is the lower lead. When you take the switch out, that wire will be blue.
