I have a 2006 mercury 50hp 2-stroke and I am having a issue with my trim. Last weekend while duck hunting I had the motor trimmed half way up because we was in shallow water then we got hung on top of a stump ( just my luck ) anyway I started revving the motor up trying to get off the top of the stump when I noticed that every time I would rev it up the motor to drop all the way down and I would have to trim it back up. But I noticed that I on the way back to the landing that everything was working fine. The boat planed off and stayed that way. Once I got the boat on the trailer I trimed the motor all the way up and I could push it down by hand. Ive been told that I could have a seal problem in the cyl or a relieve valve acting up. I also was told that trying to reseal the entire unit is a waste of time. What do you think??

If its been a fresh water boat then it should come apart pretty easy. Make sure the bypass screw on the side is good and tight. If it is, get you a seal kit, remove the T&T, spread one of your wife's best white sheets on the floor, sit in the middle and disassemble it. Just put it back like it came apart.

HAHA I'll see if I can sneak one out of the linen closest without her noticing. I did check the bypass screw and it is tight. Ill contact my local shop here and order a seal kit.

if your motor has an oval base then it is your tilt relief valve assembly p/n 827672A1. This is a repair that you should be able to do at home with a very high success rate. Just be slow and careful and you'll fix it for sure. People who rush or cut corners get into trouble with trim repair.

if your trim motor has a square base then there is no easy answer and you should either exchange the system for a new/rebuilt unit or have it rebuilt. Exchange is obviously more expensive but only takes a day instead of 2-3 weeks. ebay is good place to look.

Over 2000 or 2500 rpm,i forget which, there is an automatic safety feature that lowers the motor to a run condition. So unless you can bypass the trim module you are stuck with it just like I am. I spent a lot of time and crying at the dealer trying to figure it out, even got a new trim unit out of it untill the factory rep set us strait.

not true. factory rep doesn't seem to know his own product. there is a hole drilled into side of cylinder about 1/3 way up. it is connected to a relief valve. The piston will not rises above this hole because all the fluid pressure escapes out the side. For skilled boaters operating in swampy, stumpy, shallow conditions it is often desirable to disable the relief valve. Then the engine can tilt to any angle at any time under any condition.
