Well, I picked up a small boat to get me on the water for the rest of this season as my Starcraft project is going to take longer than expected. I picked up a 1986 Lowe 16' with a 1986 Mercury 50hp ELPT. When going to check it out on Sunday, the fella let me know that the trim took a bit of time to get moving, lots of solenoid clicking and then it would finally move, it goes down after some clicking, going up took a lot longer. He told me up front it didn't have batteries, he was just using his batteries to show me everything worked.
Well 2 days later, I charge up a couple of older batteries I had laying around and put them in the boat. Motor cranks with absolutely no issue but now the trim won't go up at all, not even any clicking from the solenoid when trying to put it up. Going down is still the same thing, solenoid clicking then it moves fine.
The trim is odd on this (at least to me, Im not used to smaller engines or engines this old). It seems to a pump mounted inside the boat. Any advice on things to check or what needs to be done? Is this standard for this model motor or something else thats been 'rigged'?
