Trim-Limit Dials, How do they work?

I recently bought my first I/O. It is on a 18' Sea Ray Seville, with the 4.3L Mercruiser with an Alpha One Sterndrive.

Somebody was telling me that I can use these two dials on the sides of the outdrive to adjust how high and low i want the trim level to make it go, and the trailer button on my throttle will bring it all the way up no matter what.

As of just today, It seems that I can bring the drive all the way up with the trim/tilt switch, and the trailor button doesnt bring it any higher than I already can holding the trim switch up. I believe that it is in the HIGHEST position, as the top of the drive is hitting the drive housing.

So, what is the deal with these dials? Im not sure that the trim dash-meter is working either, as it pretty much always says "up."

Any light?

Dan
the trim limit switch is suppose to keep you from running the drive at to much angle which is hard on the drives u-joints

the other switch just just moves the guage both switchs are a high problem area and many people just dont use them and others like to keep them working

the inportant thing is that you realize that the motor should NEVER be run with the drive trimed up more than a few inches

tommays

Does the trim limit only work when the engine is running or is it supposed to be functioning all the time, b/c ive only used it while on a trailor in my garage.

dan
the trim limit is the switch on the port side of the gimbal ring. the trim sender is the one on the stbd side. if you look they are labeled :) :) . someone has bypassed the limit switch. I think the limit was about 21 inches from the fwd anchor to the aft anchor after that you had to hit the trailer button. it has no affect on trim down. it works by opening the circuit on the trim switch when adjusted and working.
to answer your question"trim-limit dials, how do they work"
not well and not long. its dicey at best. the replacement kit works better now but they are about 75 dollars. dont attempt to splice the wiring at all. it requires removal of the bell housing to change them. will be a good time to change the drive bellows though :) :) .

if you look at how the wires get from here to there and the fact that there under water it just doesent work out

and you realy dont want anything to short and blow the 20 amp control fuse at the worst possable time

tommays

Dan,
I'd dare to say that 75%, or More of the Trim Limit/Indicator Switches/Senders in the world are disconnected, or Broken.........

After a short time, Seat of the Pants driving takes over,+ the Limits/Gauges are unneeded........

The Choice is Yours......
But, It's a B!tch of a Job, with Little Real Returns for the Busted Knuckles.......
