I have a 1990 Johnson 40 horse. Is it possible or practical to put a tilt/trim assy on it from a 86 Evinrude 50?

Don't think so. Evidently no one knows yet but I would guarantee that someone is researching it for you. Give them some time.

Re: Trim moter

Ok. Then let me ask something else along the same lines. The Johnson is hung on a Sun Tracker Bass Buggy. It is tilted waaaayyy forward. I can't seem to get it lifted up/back. Upon looking up in there, it looks like it just might have a tilt cylendar hid between the braket that hangs on the boat and the engine leg, but like I said, I can't seem to get it lifted up. There is a lock lever but whether locked or unlocked, it won't come up.

Hummm. Have you ever been able to tilt this motor? There are a few options on how to proceed.<br />Mac

If you're sure the lock mechanism is not engaged, and you can't lift the motor up by hand, that is a good indication that you "might" already have power tilt/trim. Do you see any wires coming up from that area? Take a flashlight, and have a closer look.

Re: Trim moter

The "cylender" turned out to be a dampener for when you let down the engine. The lock lever that keeps the engine from jumping up in reverse is broken. The reason for that is that the cable is frozen and the lever is is plastic. However, I did not see any way of triming the engine up.

Sounds like you have that hydraulic assisted manual tilt. Its supposed to hold the motor at whatever angle you lock it at. You will have to get ahold of the cable somehow and really pull it to get it to release. Most likely its okay, just needs a new end on it.

Re: Trim moter

If it's that tough to pull, won't it just break the next lever I put on it?

The cable has little plastic ends that snap onto the ball socket on the lever. You probably have a broken plastic connector. They really don't break that often but they do break. The lever has a camming action that allows it to pull the cable, but it only has to pull it like 1/4" or even less.

Yep, that's sounds exactly what happened. Where can a feller find another one of those levers? Are the a commonly stocked item at boat shops?

Yep....most John/Rude shops carry the socket end in stock. But you'll need to get the motor up to replace the broken one. Look in at the top of the assist cylinder. If you can get a screwdriver in there and pry up on the valve, this will release the cylinder and let ya' tip the motor up. Some help from a friend is nice to have.

Ok, had to order the plastic connecter. When I installed it, it still doesn't work. It's as if it isn't pulling far enough. Any suggestions?

Re: Trim moter

The tilt lever shouldn't have any more than 1/4" play. As Walker suggested, screw on the connector till you get the play right.

Re: Trim moter

Thanks, Finaly got it. I had screwed it on the same distance of the old, broken one. I guess it had backed off a few turns. Thanks guys.
