Trim motor fulid

Hi Guys,
I have a question.
I need to replace my trim motor and pump, all one unit.
On my mercury 70 hp
A marine mechanic told me I can use transmission fluid, is this true?
and is there a specific kind?

Is the trim pump in the boat or on the motor?

1988 mercury outboard 70 hp
trim motor is with the pump built on it, motor and pump together.

I meant is the pump in the boat or attached to the motor. The old ones were separate.

Mercury calls for Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid.
The general consensus is 5W-30 or 10W-30 motor oil or ATF works just fine.

My owners manual for a 2002 90 triple said if what's currently in the sump is red use tranny fluid, if clear Merc/Quicksilver PTT fluid. Full is lower unit trimmed all the way up and fluid even with the threads of the fill screw....like add more and it will spill out.
