Pulled the cover off of the boat to start getting it ready for season and found a puddle of fluid in the corner of the engine compartment. Is this the trim motor?

What is the best way to determine where this unit is leaking? It looks like there is fluid around the middle where the top and bottom piece mate together.

1998 Chapparal with a 4.3 volvo penta engine and a cobra sx outdrive.

Ok so I found in the manual that this is the trim/tilt assembly. I know im missing it but I cant find the parts breakdown for this unit to see if there are any seals between the motor and the resivor.

What is the full model or serial number of your engine? There are several different 4.3's that were used around 1998.

Do you know the model number for your drive? There should be a couple tags on it...such as SX-C or SX-M.

This looks like your model of trim pump. But a complete drive model number would help.

That looks like my unit. It looks like there is an o ring between the housing and the tank.. Ill have to take mine apart and have a look.

Im looking at the warranty card. It says transmission outdrive sn 4112042451. Ill have to wait untill I get home to look at the actual unit.

Re: Trim motor leak?

It appears your drive is a SX-C (or SX-C1, not sure of the difference). In that parts diagram, there is a kit 3854397 that is a valve body seal kit. I imagine it has all the o-rings and other parts needed to seal the unit. You could order just the o-ring if you feel lucky, or get the kit so you have all the parts necessary to fix it no matter what is leaking. Oh, and since I doubt you want to order it from Europe, you can order those parts from marinepartsexpress or probably here at Iboats too.

Re: Trim motor leak?

I could not find a tag on the lower unit anywhere but im pretty sure thats the right motor. I searched the 3854397 part number and found that it was also used in some early to mid 90s OMC boats. I can get those parts locally. Im not in a huge hurry so Im going to remove the unit and take it apart and see if I can see a bad seal. Like you said, I might just be an oring. My luck it will be the tank or something like that.
