trim motor removal?

help! i have a late 80s ,merc 70 hp trying to replace the trim motor .looks like the whole unit has to come out to get the motor off , i have all the bolts out for the unit but it looks like they built the motor around the trim system, it wont come out!, is there some way to split this thing ?,, any help appreciated.... thanks very much... someone has to know

Well I just did a 1989 70 hp merc.
What you have to do is tilt the motor all the way up by using the manual release on the left side. Then you will want to find a way to support the right side of the motor. I used a pry bar between the transom and the tilt braket. Then you will want to take off the steering cable nut on the right side. Remove the 3 bolts holding the entire tilt system on the right side. Remove the 2 transom bolts. Take the cable and run it through the bracket. Then you should be able to slide the right side braket up and out of the way. There are 2 small hex bolts holding in the motor and the pump diagonal from each other. You may have taken out 4 long screws that hold the pump to the motor. You should probably put those back in. This pump fits in there tight, so be patient getting it out. I tried to turn it a bit first, and that helped.
