Trim motor sank, with new brushes still problems.

I've had my orignal (Hitachi ?) trim motor from my '90 200 ETXD laying around for awhile and I'm still determined to find the root cause of the problem.

Long story short, the entire motor sank a few years back. I got everything to work except the trim/tilt motor. I cleaned the armature, and installed a new brush plate, but when I run it, it spins for about 5-7 seconds then winds down slowly to where the "breaker" on the brush plate pops. I've ran it while connected to my VOM and can see the voltage drop as the motor slowly spins in the lasting seconds.

I have no idea why it's doing this. I've tried, to the best of my knowledge to find and open winding somewhere, but everything looks fine. I even tried to find someone with a growler to check it out, but no such luck.

The only reason I am still so determined to fix this is because I had since replaced this one with an ARCO, which is now failing. It never performed as well as the original and they don't offer replacement parts for this model, so it would be great to get the original fixed.

Any ideas on what's going on, or a test I could perform to find out?

Voltage dropping means the current is increasing...sounds shorted.
I'll guess it was salt water.

Take it to a starter/alternator rebuild shop.

A corroded or dry bearing will do this. The bearings need to be good and lubricated. I use Moly grease.
