Trim only works when engine is running

Hello everyone I just purchased a 88 Four Winns Liberator 201. It has the 350 OMC king cobra drive in it and my buddy took it out for me today to see how it ran. ( I don't want to get in to why he took it out and not me but my wife was being a PITA ).

He said the trim went down but it wouldn't go up until he started the boat. Then after driving it for a while the trim wasn't working all the time. I have the books that came with it but I figured I would ask to see if anyone here had a similar problem. I'm guessing it has something to do with a bad solenoid or a dirty connection.

I would appreciate any help.

Could be a bad switch, weak battery, low fluid, bad motor or bad solenoid. You're gonna need a multi-meter and some skill with dc electrics to sort that one out. Check the fluid level first.
