Hey guys always have had a merc but bought a really nice hardly used chrysler 120 boat runs and looks like new but I think there is a problem with the trim. It has 2 hydrolic cylinders 1 of which has lines to it and the other doesnt plus 1 small push type cylinder in the middle when I trim up and then give her throttle the engine goes all the way back down to the bottom. Should the trim on these engines keep the motor up or is it not working right again I am new to chryslers so any help would be greatly appriciated.

Re: trim problem on 120 chrysler

The cylinder to the starboard is tilt and the cylinder to port is a shock. The center pentagon shaped cylinder is trim.

Usually, when trim does not hold, the problem is with the check valve inside the pump. These check valves are visible from outside the pump. If you have the pump where the valves are held in with circlips, they are not rebuildable but you may be able to buy one from rritt. Send him a PM.

If you have the screw in type check valves, they are rebuildable. The front valve (the one you can see on the pump) is the one that holds the engine up or out. It is usually a small O Ring inside the valve that has gone bad.

In the meantime, since you can not get a 1/2 inch bar through the holes in the brackets (trim cylinder is in the way), use a couple of 2 inch long stainless bolts (with the heads outside) in the holes that give the best running trim. Instead of multiple nuts, I use a stainless 1/2 inch coupler on each bolt where it would contact the engine swivel yoke.
