Just bought an old 89 3.0 liter I/O boat and noticed in my yard the trim didnt work all that well. As I activated the button the motor would rev up then slowly die off when either going up or down.Thats the first clue.
Tossed into the lake today, noticed the trim really didnt work all that well. Thinking it was nature of the beast since Im used to high powered bass boats with out boards.
But when I loaded the boat back onto the trailer, the trim button up or down did not work. All I got was a click from each solenoid.Since I couldn't trailer the boat back to the house with the motor down with out damage. I started checking all the elect contacts. They seemed to be fine. I tried bypassing the solenoid, that didnt. Since I didnt have a test light or a DVM, I resorted to an age old mechanics tool and thats a hammer.
I started banging and with the wifey hitting the up button the pump started working better then ever.
My first thought was a bad solenoid, but the lower solenoid didnt work either.
Now, Im thinking bad brushes in the motor, me banging freed them up and now are working, for now.
Your thoughts?
Suggestions on where to find brushes for this motor and how to replace them?
