I have a question about boat trim. I picked up a Cheatah v166 with mercusier 3.0 engine this weekend. If i push the trailer button it brings it up out of the water, if push the up trim it brings the out drive out of the water. If i push the down trim nothing happens until i am in gear and I am under way. is this normal? or do i have a problem? Please help, I am new to boats she is my first real boat.

Thanks
scott

Re: Trim Problems

You're OK - that's why it's called a 'tilt-trim' switch. The first 12 inches or so of travel will be slow ( if engine all the way down ) that's your trim function. After that the engine 'tilt' comes into play which moves it rather quickly to the full up position. So say you are launching the boat and the engine is tilted all the way in the 'up' position. When you first actuate the button the motor will move rather fast until it hits a certain spot where it slows down - but continues to move. Right there is your trim position, and it works ( or should ) the other way in reverse. It's so much easier to trim an engine while underway in slow, deliberate movements rather than a fast motion. Consider it as a 'two speed' gear box - if that helps.
