Trim pump fluid question

Hello,

My mechanic just overhauled my trim hydraulic system. He said that he used the Quicksilver/Mercury 92-858075Q01 fluid in the system.

I found out that I have to replace the reservoir in the pump (Sierra 18-6771) hence will probably lose a bit of fluid...

Can I use any other fluid in combination with the Quicksilver/Mercury 92-858075Q01 fluid?

That stuff is pretty expensive and hard to get here in AZ.

Can I use a SAE40 or SAE30 in combination with it?

Thanks!

I use SAE 30 in mine, but mine is the cool old rectangle one with external reverse lock valve :frusty:

I really don't want to have to drain out all the fluid if I don't have to.... so if I can just add that SAE30 (or whatever) to it - it would save me a lot of time and $$$

May depend on the year...for mine, service manual #6 says that 10w30 or 10w40 can be substituted if the Quicksilver Power Trim and steering fluid isn't available. However, for mine the part number on the recommended fluid is 92-90100A12. I'm working with an 87 3.0. It says that is compatible for both the Oildyne or Pristolite pump units.

If you want to go with the same type of fluid, pick up some power tilt and trim fluid from a sporting goods store or WM, several manufacturers make it. Or, get the Merc stuff.

I'm not one for mixing fluids and wouldn't go with engine oil, but it would most likely work without issue. I have straight engine oil in my trim pump...

$10 - $12 a quart? Save the hassle of changing fluid and use what the manufacturer recommends.
