Trim Pump Fluid

I had to repair the trim pump on my alpha I Gen II. I poured out the old fluid from the reservoir and replaced it with Power Trim & Steering fluid per Mercruiser recommendations. Merc service manual says you can use engine oil if the trim fluid is not available. Two questions: Can I mix the two fluids? I am nor sure what fluid was in the reservoir before I drained it. It did not smell like engine oil so it could have been the correct fluid. But I heard some people use ATF. Assuming the answer to my 1st question is that they cannot be mixed, how do I drain the old fluid from the entire system?

Motor oil is better from the standpoint of a small leak will just seep or drip if you use thinner oil i.e. ATF it will mist or spray and get everything yucky.
