I have a 350 Chevy with a pre alpha outdrive

I've been troubleshooting my trim. I could never get it to make a sound or click with the switches. So i've been reading posts. I connected the battery and jumped a wire from the positive, looking for the blue and green.

When I touched the wire on the green, it clicked (Contact #4). The green wire was thinner gauge than some of the other.

When I touched the blue wire, it didn't do anything, just sparked. (Contact #3) Should I be looking for a thin gauge blue?

What does that mean? Did I do it right?

Where does the oil or fluid for the trim pump go?

I think the Blue for up and Green for down wires you're talking about are the ones in the removable plug just below the #4 in your picture.

That plug goes to the trim switch at the helm.

If motor not even running, try tapping it lightly with a hammer while connected and that may free up the motor inside. had to do that to mine a few times. ultimately not getting good contact on the motor leads (likely worn out springs or dirt). took mine apart, cleaned the leads inside, and stretched the springs out. working great since

Re: Trim Pump Help - Please help

I cleaned up the contacts, but still no go...

I haven't hit it with a hammer, but will try that later.

Are they pretty easy to take apart? Is there a kit I need to get or can I do it as is?

All I get is click on green and nothing on blue. Is it supposed to click on blue (All i get is a little spark)? But if no click on blue, then solenoid could be bad, right? I'm a newbie trying to figure this stuff out. sorry

Anyway, if it clicks, the solenoid is good right? Does that mean the pump is bad?

I'm wondering if i'm not getting anything on blue because my gauge of wire is to small. I'm using 14, should that be okay?

Thanks

The solenoid's internal contacts can be corroded/bad and there still will be a click. Test the solenoid output when it's clicked. Or jump the big terminals to see if anything happens, if it does it's the solenoid, if not most likely the motor of wiring.

The hammer tap NOT SMACK is just to jolt loose the brushes which often get corroded in the holders inside the motor.

Re: Trim Pump Help - Please help

Woody,

The oil goes in the bottom of the pump housing (below the solonoid) - not in the green housing which appears (to me) to be a power pack for trimtabs. The housing has two plugs, visible on your second photo. The one on the lower level (small shelf) should be removed and oil (atf or 40 sae) added until it is full to this level. The upper plug is actually a screw with gasket that seals a vent for this reservoir. It should be left loose (unsealed) once the reservoir is full.

Jumping between the two large solenoid terminals will bypass the solenoid and hopefully cause the pump to run. If not, disassembly and rebuilding of the powerpack will be needed and that is not inexpensive. (several hundreds $$) Hope you only have solenoid problems.

Best of luck
