I almost have the 76 Mark Twain runabout back together after a transom rebuild, but have a few details to work out before we try starting it up. First of all, we got the wiring back together and re-connected where I *think* everything went. This is on a 351 Ford w/233 outdrive (pre-apha).

First problem: I pushed the trim up, up/out, and in buttons and only the the up, up/out buttons caused the pump to make a sound. It only clicked when I pushed thm, but at least it told me it was getting power. I know the system needs to be refilled with sae 30 oil as most of it drained out during the rebuild. Also, the trim switch wires that come through the transom plate are the same color and have identical plugs, is there anything that could be harmed if I reversed these? The low pressure and high pressure lines are also Identical in this boat, so those could be reversed as well.

Second Problem: When trying to get the outdrive on (my dad and I attempting to manhandle it) we were having a hard time heeping the unit in Forward gear. If I released pressure on the prop after adjusting the shift arm, the unit would go back into neutral. Any thoughts?

If I can manage to get the outdrive on and verify that the engine runs and goes into gear, then I'd like to get the trim working so we can test it in the water.

Well my question wasn't really about the pressure holding, it was more regarding whether it should come out of gear so easily without any foce being applied to the shift arm.

Ayuh,... It falls outa gear as soon as pressure is released,...
Hence, the bungee around the propshaft to the cav-plate holds enough Pressure to Hold it in gear, to get it Together...

Did you Align the gimbel bearing to the motor,..??

Yes, I have an alignment tool and the engine mounts didn't get changed, so the alignment tool was pretty much spot-on. We're going to try it again this next weekend with the engine hoist bolted to the drive cap to take care of the weight while we position it and slide it on.

Bondo, any thoughts on the trim issue? I looked in the service manual, but there isn't much on wiring diagrams that I saw.

Here is a picture of the wires from the controller. I think this should help you out. I used it when wiring up my "project". My boat did not have the trim pump or the associated wiring when I got it, so I had to use this diagram to determine how to hook mine up.

I hope it helps.

Well that diagram seems to be more for the trim limit switches isn't it? I am good with wrenches but kind of suck with wiring schematics. The wiring dilemma I have is mainly with the solonoid attached to the trim pump. The are two metal threaded posts on the front of the solonoid and I just don't know what each post functions-as.
