Trim pump question

The motor stopped trimming up and down, but the trim motor seems to be operating faster than normal. almost 'free wheeling' like there is no load on it. Using the trouble shooting guide I found on the site, I am nearly positive that the coupling between the motor and the pump is broken.

I am wondering if this happened because of age/wear and tear, or if it would be more likely that the pump over time added resistance from dirt/age and that caused the coupling to break. I know this is all speculation as i have yet to take the thing apart, but i kinda want an idea of what im getting myself into. I would definitely be more into rebuilding it myself than paying and arm and a leg.... can anyone please shed some light on something i've never had to fool with?

Re: Trim pump question

you are right i probably should check that. the trim was working though and just quit. i would think that even if it were low it would have some kind of range...right? it does not move up or down at all. i dont think i have a leak or broken line, the motor would sink...correct?

A quick check could be to remove the lines from the pump and put a rag down and hit the button real quick and see what you get... Just a thought. Althought i did the same thing and ended up painting the top of the garage with milky fluid lol

Re: Trim pump question

You guys be aware that on the upside of those pumps they generate 2500 to 3000psi. If the drive is all the way down the resevor should be full, first check, if so and if you can get the part, there is a plastic coupler between the motor and the pump that is most likely broken and is an easy fix.
