trim pump wouldn't shut off

1988 Marlin open bow, 4.3 L Mercruiser...

So we put the boat in yesterday, get underway from the dock and I lower the drive all the way down. I start cruising away from the dock and can hear some strange noise, like a pump running.
After a brief look around I realized that the trim pump was running. So I go into minor panic mode and start wiggling wires, fiddling with the trim/trailer switches to no avail.
Luckily, I find my buddy on the other side of the lake who's an electrician. In the mean time, I'm a bit more panicked now, and the pump is getting warm so I break off the power wire to the pump by hand.
My buddy starts with the throttle switches and concludes that they're in working order.
He then takes the "cap" off of the bank of solenoid switches and is able to get the drive up and down by touching the appropriate solenoid with the hot wire that I broke off.
So I'm assuming that my "down" solenoid was stuck in on position and is in need of replacement.
Would you guys agree?

Thank you for any input, and additionally, is it a pretty basic swap out? I'm not a mechanic/electrician, but I can do basic repair,etc...

ok, I appreciate the vote of confidence
Would your opinion be that the solenoid was/is stuck? any other considerations before I throw some parts at it?

sounds right to me, just changed a relay for starter on mine, they use 2 of the same relay on trim, 1 for up and 1 for down. easy swap 2 mounting bolts, 2 big wires on top ( power in/ power out and 2 little wires on front ( switched and ground).

This is a continuation of the trim pump solenoid topic...
In my haste to look over the trim switches etc I disconnected the wire connectors in the little snap **** plastic case behind the throttle casing...
I realize now that the wires are completely diff colors...
From the shifter switches the wires are purple, orange, and two whites, one white is sort of beige..
From the boat there's a green, blue, purple and red..
Any guidance would be appreciated...
I have a voltmeter with a VERY basic understanding of this stuff

Ayuh,.... Donno what yer lookin' at, but one wire to the switch will be the power feed, one wire will be "Hot" when ya push the button one way, 'n another wire will be "Hot" when ya push the button the other way,....

I recommend diagnostics be done with the meter at the pump wirin', 'n somebody else pushin' the switches,...
Then it's red for Power, blue sky Up, 'n green grass Down,....

No need to dig out the switches unless they test bad,...
