Just to confirm a low level of fluid will cause the trim to have issues raising when in forward? Correct? I was running it the other day after having the tilt trim motor rebuilt and noticed it didnt have the power to trim up while in forward. It can do it in nuetral or on land no problem and doesnt come back down unless it is sitting for about a week. Which from what i hear and read on this old of a system is amazing. It is a 85 85hp force motor. I topped it off when i got home and had a bunch of air in the system i guess since it hissed at me when i took the fill plug out. And a lot of air bubbles were coming out of the fill port for a while. I have never filled a system and thought if i raised it to max and lowered it a few times it would work the air out. Guess i didnt do it enough then if that is right. Thanks guys learning alot from all of you.

Really need to find a decent service manual to read from.

Re: Trim question

low fluid will lift to a spot and then stop. just keep cycling up and down and adding fluid at the mid point. 85HP are all 1980's engines and halfway is the best spot to top off reservoir. if problems persist after being topped off then it is the spring settings in your valve body. It could be spring setting in tilt piston if you have 25" shaft and changed to a 1992-1994 mercury tilt ram.

Re: Trim question

O ok then i will fill it that way. i was wrong on my filling procedure i was raising and lowering to max on each end the topping it off at the bottom. would explain why i didnt put much into the resivoir. thank you rritt i believe it is all the 1985 setup the peopel that rebulit the motor didnt mention any difference from what i dropped it off to them as. they even had to get parts for the tilt motor. i will go fill the resivoir like taht tonight then i plan on going to the lake tomorrow afternoon. will be a good test for that then all that will be left is that darn tach. lol.

Re: Trim question

you can fill at any position with 1985. Middle is just a good compromise between having extra fluid and putting stress on pump seals.

Re: Trim question

So RRITT I must thank you for the advice. I filled the resivoir like you said and today was able to trim the motor up while in forward at WOT. I got it up to 27 mph today and the prop is damaged so I need a new prop but was needing to get the other things first. It was fun to mess with the speed and the bow being in the water or not. I didnt realize the motor would actually change the way it sounded. I have never owned a outboard and been able to drive one and experiment. MY dad was in charge with his boat and i was not allowed to trim or any thing like that since it was his boat. So I am enjoying this new found fun.
