I replaced the bellows and all the bushings for the steering this spring. I did pull the trim sender before pulling the helment, marked everything also. Trim gauge(it's the digital style,1988 year) has not worked right since. Most of the time it just reads 63, but once in a blue moon it will read right. I checked the sender with a meter and it seems to be working correctly. I did notice the wire colors don't match on each side of the plugs. That's the way it was before I worked on it and the gauge worked perfect before. Any clue as to why it's doing this?

You have it way out of adjustment.
What I do is with the drive all the way down, and a helper at the helm to read the numbers out loud, remove the rack from the helmet. Then slowly turn it until you helper tells you you are around zero or close to it. Sit on the drive to add pressure on it. Turn the gear in the helmet so the side of the gear that hits the rack backs up a few teeth and insert the rack. Hold it so the hole lines of for the nylon screw.
Find out what the gauge says. Adjust so you are near -4 to -8 on the gauge.after installing the rack and securing.
Now go inside and loosen the potentiometer and adjust till you get to -5 or -6 on the gauge.
Run the drive up and down a few times to make sure it stays.

Here is the book information on it. Usually, the marks on the Potentiometer and the gear are missing, thus the reason for my method above.

That's what I thought. I'll give your idea a try. I did pull the sender and moved it by hand and got nothing? Btw, mine still has all the marks and the helmet gear is new.
