In the middle of the ?stroke? of tilting the outdrive up the gauge shows the outdrive ?full up? for a while, then correct again. I assume in the sweep of the rheostat inside the sender there is some corrosion or something. I have read many posts after searching about replacing the sender being a fairly large job. I am wondering if I can remove the sender and if there is a way to open it and spray it with contact cleaner, etc?

If you take those 4 little screws out on the outside of the switch, you can see the contacts inside. If you could get it to work, I don't know how long it would last...

I'm sure I'm not the only person who considers the trim sender/gauge system completely useless.
If that's your only problem with your boat, consider yourself lucky.

Just replace the potentiometer inside the sender. Merc part number 805134a4 costs about $16
