I have a 2004 Mercruiser 4.3L and the trim gage was jumping from all the way down to up. I read several post about the situation and after seeing several talking about big dollars for the repair, I decided to take a look at the sending unit. I took the sending unit apart and cleaned and re-greased and it is working fine now. Really glad I did not take to the shop. The only thing now is that one of the wires going into the unit has about a three quarters inch of insulation completely gone with bare wire showing. Any suggestions?

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,...... Learn to drive by "the seat of yer pants",....

Then ya won't need the trim gauge,..... the most useless gauge on a dash,....

bare wires contribute heavily to electrolsys problems. might consider rewiring it slightly so that the gauge works ONLY when the trim/tilt button is used

My last boat didn't even have a gauge. The limit switch didn't work either so it was seat of the pants.

My suggestion is a little bit of the liquid electrical tape stuff, or even silicone caulking on the bare wire.

I am with tp! A few coats of Liquid Tape. Put on a layer, let it dry, repeat until you get a nice buildup. A layer or two on the rest of the exposed wire couldn't hurt. Good luck.

Thanks, I used a 3M wire insulating product that our work shop guy had. 30 mil thick and really sticky on one side.
