Trim sending unit question?

I have a 1989 Javelin with a Johnson 110 motor (Model #j110leam) I am tring to replace the Rheostat in the trim sending unit mechanism. I have looked all over the internet, and call several boat repair mechanics, but feel short on my search.
I am tring to find out what the wattage and ohms that the rheostat should be. It bolts to the back of the boat motor housing which operates the gauge from the signal wire that feeds up into the trim relay control box. If anyone has came across this or has a little bit of knowledge with this. I would appreciate it.

As far as I know the rheostat is built into that unit, I have never replaced just that part, I have always simply put a new one on the engine. I would worry about sealing the thing well from all of the water it will be in and how it would bolt to the engine given that I believe it is built into the molded body of the trim position sensor.

Your model # doesn't make sense.

Re: Trim sending unit question?

I picked up a trim sender laying on my coworkers bench today while thinking of this thread, because I basically only ever just replace them rather than looking at them from a technical point of view. Yep, the rheostat is molded into the sender. For sealing and for mounting, I don't think going the way of trying to "fix" this sender is a good idea. I would just buy a new one and be done with it, if you really need it at all. Do you use the trim gauge?

You sound like a technical guy and I understand wanting to fix the part, but sometimes it aint worth the hassle. :) The other mechanics probably change them for new ones and were a little mystified at your question.

I just thought....are you asking for the part number for the sending unit to replace it as a whole? If so, like boobie said your model number doesn't make sense. Look again at the tag and someone will be able to help you find it.

After looking at the comments you guys posted i think i fat fingered the model# correct model #(j110tlaem) After researching more about this it sounds like a lot of boat owner that have a trim gauge don't even use it. So for now i think I'm going to go ahead and move on to my other two gauge problems the Tach and Speedohmeter. The Tach works when it wants too, while going across water and the Speedohmeter flapper at the back of the boat is broken and the tube is cut just above the flapper. Does anybody know a good place online to buy missing parts and as for tach any ideas one a spot to dive into first.

If you ever want the trim sender, the BRP part # is 583358, but they're saying it's NLA.
