trim sending unit question

I have a 1985 boston whaler, with a johnson 90 hp outboard, my problem is the gauge on the console doesnt show the engine up or down unless the key is turned to on position or engine is running, is the gauge defective or is a wire open?? <br /><br />any help is greatly appreciated

Dogtoy,<br />No all is fine. The gauge will only work when the ignition switch is in the run position with power to the gauge and sender unit. Depending on the gauge, when you switch the engine off the gauge can go fully up, or down or stay in the last position.<br />Peter
