Hello,
I have a volvo penta SX outdrive and inadvertently ordered a three wire trim sending unit replacement instead of a two wire. I have seen some mention that the three wire can be used in place of a two wire. Why not just send it back and get the right one? Because it was a problem getting the 3 wire one here to begin with. Long story, won't bore with details.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to connect the sender to the boat wiring in the engine bay (two wires) and confirm the trim indication works as you rotate the sender. The sender only sends a variable resistance as a function of rotation for the two wires. The color coding of sender and boat wiring should give a guide on which wires to use.
