2002 Sea Ray 5.0 Alpha 1 Gen 2. The wire for sensor on my drive broke off at end where it goes into the sending unit. I was told the drive has to come off to run the wire. Does anyone think it can be done without taking off the drive? I see a bolt just under the wire going through the transom on the outside of boat that a swivel socket might reach. Thank you, RR

Re: Trim sensor

What is the big deal with pulling the drive ??????? That should happen yearly for maintenance reasons.
But to change the senders, you might be able to get by without removing the drive or the bellhousing. Depends on your abilities to work in small tight places.

Re: Trim sensor

If it broke off at the sender, you should be able to take it off, and reattach the wire.

I don't know about the sender but the limit has brushes that the wire just feeds into and is locked in place by a set screw may be the same for the sender? take it apart and look at it could'nt hurt because if you go the other rout your gonna be replacing them as a set anyway $150.00.

You might need to take the ourdrive off in order to get the bell housing (or what ever it is called) to pivot down far enough to expose some daylight up where the wires feed through the transom assembly. Maybe you would just have to take the trim cylinders off, so the outdrive will swing down as far as possible.

Somewhere in the Mercruiser manual, I read that the preferred method is to disassembly the gimbal ring, etc. However, I was able to get access to the bolt that retains the wires/grommets by just lowering the outdrive as far as it would go.

Re: Trim sensor

Last year the engine coupler went and the drive was off so the bellows were chcked near the end of summer. I think I can get the old harness out but not sure if I could bolt back in. What I did was keep the ends on the sensor and put solderless connectors with 3m 5200 in them and heat tape over that. There is plenty of wire to stay above water line. I will see what happens.

Re: Trim sensor

It is reccomended to replace the sensors and complete wires, because sea water will infiltrate the wire over time and ruin it. However people do splice new sensors in and it does work.
