Trim Shorting Engine?

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with my 88 4.3L OMC Cobra. At half throttle to WOT if you adjust the trim, while you have the button pushed either up or down the engine sounds like it is slowing or bogging or wants to stall. As soon as you release the trim button it goes back to sounding normal. At headway speed it either doesn't happen or is not noticable. My first thought is that it is electrical and a wire is arcing or shorting out when the trim is pressed. Can anybody confirm my thought or offer up their own thoughts on this, and what wires to look for or check? Thanks.

Anything is possible on a boat. I can't help with your question but here is the wiring colors ABYC_Wiring.htm

Sorry this won't link but just copy and paste to your browser - it will take you there.

Could be a bad trim motor but most common is a bad or corroded connection, could be right at the battery or at the start solenoid or ??? What happens is that anything with a significant current pull like the trim motor is actually stealing enough power away from the ignition to cause your symptoms. Check and clean and tighten those connections and verify that the battery is healthy.

Check the brushes in the trim motor...if they are worn, they will draw more amps....I think:redface:

I had the same problem, What happen to me was the battery would read fully charged but it could not handle a load. I would get the batteries load tested.
