Hello All need some advice please:

I have a 1990 Alpha I, that is having trim problems. It goes up fine but sometimes it will not go down, the motor runs but the drive does not move if I keep switching it on and off it will eventualy move. When it does you can here the pitch change in the pump. Is there any way to trouble shoot what is causing the problem?

Thanks
Tallman

ooh yeah also, what kind of oil goes in this thing??? The electrical part works fine.... I think it is a hydraulic failure of some sort...

Thanks again]

Tallman

Hey Kelvin,
Sounds like you May have water contamination...
The trim system will be happy with either P/S fluid, A/Trans fluid, Or engine oil.....
I prefer the ATF myself....
For trouble Shooting,
Disconnect the lines at the cyl.s... Can you move the cyl.s in + out freely ??? (Be careful, the first few pumps Should spew oil all over everything)
If so, Run the pump up.+ down abit... What's the oil Look like ???(contain the spray) You can Keep Adding oil to the Res.,+ purge the system this way....
Hook 'em back up,+ Try it...

Bill:

Sounds like a good plan, I have to try and get my dad to come down and help me trouble shoot this one....

I found some info saying something about a pressure relief valve having foreign material in it or something... You ever hear of that, is it rebuildable??? Cause it seems like the pump is working great.. Just not pushing the fluid through

You Should be able to purge the "foreign material", by pumping some oil through it....

Re: Trim System Troubleshooting.

I've had this problem before. The hydrolic cylinders may need to be rebuilt or replaced (mine had to be replaced.)

The motor creates plenty of pressure to lift the outdrive but once raised it relies more on gravity to lower the outdrive. If the cylinders are corroded inside the outdrive will not go down.
Try standing on the outdrive while running the trim motor down.

This happened to me in the water once. I had to go overboard and disconnect the trim cylinders from the outdrive. This dropped the outdrive all the way down and made forward motion no problem... reverse was an impossibility but I was able to get back in for repairs. It beats the cost of towing!

Finally Took the thing apart,

Looks I flushed the system (Sort of) and it is working now, there is still crap in the system though.... Have to flush it again... But at least now it is working... I hope that solves it...

Tallman
