My trim tab is damaged and I was about to order a new one when the other day I saw a new model 150 merc and it didn't have one on it! Well, I ask the man who owned the boat why didn't it have a trim tab and he said that they (Mercury) were not putting them on there any more because they didn't do anything!!I ask him if I needed one on my motor and he said no!! Does anybody know anything about this?? Why wouldn't you need a trim tab anymore?

Re: Trim Tab??

Joe ,if the steering of the boat is hard,(Pulling to ether side)and the cable is free, adjusting the trim tab makes for easy steering. as for merc, just think of the money they save by elimonating that part,I wonder if the recess is still there to install one if need beeee?

Re: Trim Tab??

Someone told me that the newer boats have steering systems with a feature called "no feedback"...basically meaning that the motor cant move the steering wheel. This safety feature means that the natural tendency of the outboard to rotate is held in check by the steering system, and the tab is not needed. My boat is an older model and does not have that feature.

The trip tab also protects the motor from galvanic corrosion. The gearcase will be eaten away by the action of electricity and water. Stainless Steel props greatly speed up this process. This occurs in fresh and salt water!

I would think you will want to put on a new one!
