it seems that the trim tab adjuster screw on the top side came loose or fell into the hole and I can't get to it --any ideas on removal of this piece?--need to get it off to get to other bolt for separating the upper and lower units

Re: trim tab

On mercruiser once the bolt is unscrewed the tab falls free.

....beats me how "the trim tab adjuster screw on the top side came loose" without the tab falling off, or how (it) "fell into the hole" because it's already in a hole!!!
For whatever reason you can not remove the tab, just break it up with a hammer and chisel to reveal that last lower unit parting screw. You probably need a new tab anyway.

If you want answers that aren't just a bunch of guesses about what you are working on, you might consider putting in your posts what type of drive, model number, year etc. of what you have. They are NOT all the same.

.....but Don, we determined from previous posts that he has a "boat is 1974 trisonic 1900 riviera, engine is a straight 6 merc model 165" with what everyone believes is an Alpha unit. :):):)
