trim tabs on 22' Islander

I would like to put tabs on the boat this year. The installation manual shows the tab being 3/8" above the bottom of the hull with the lowest of the bolts (there is an upper and lower run) being slightly above that. What I am wondering is if the bolt will be going into wood...does the transom wood go pretty much down to the bottom of the hull as you get towards the side? The year of the boat is 1993.
Thanx.....Dan

On all the S/C I have worked on the transom wood stops at least 3 to 6" s above the bottom of the hull. see picture

The only way to access the area would be to either remove the rear section of floor, or cut say 6" off the rear most edge to get to the transom, to put nuts on bolts if that is what you are thinking.

Thanx...I was hoping the wood went down far enough for the screws to bite into. The guys with tabs must just use sheet metal screws??

Yup, just seal them good with 3M4200.

that seems kinda flimsy for the stresses that will be on trim tabs. ???

I agree with B2. Metal tapping screws into a single layer of aluminum is a little risky. I used rubber "Well-nuts" rather than hacking up the floor (and removing my fuel tank) for access. I would have preferred to have used nuts and bolts with large washers inside. The Wellnuts I used have a 1/4"-20 brass insert that is isolated from the aluminum hull by the rubber body. I had to drill 1/2" clearance holes to insert the Wellnuts which caused me some apprehension, but in the end, I rationalized that a good portion of the stress on the bolts is a vertical push as well as the pull astern. Are you planning stainless tabs or plastic? Although the mounting plate is on the outside of the transom, I think that stainless mounts will at least spread the stresses on all of the fasteners equally as a unit, since they're not likely to bend like plastic might.

I'm not sure why there's a need to have the tabs 3/8" above the hull. My logic says that the fewer imperfections in the planing surface, the better. Obviously they can't be below the hull, but 1/8" above should be adequate. Maybe someone more knowledgeable in tab design can chime in. - Grandad

I was thinking of going with Lenco which are stainless. Glen, you have installed them as you suggested with no issues? Thanx for the suggestions, and I will be sure to post back with the results......Dan

another thought on below-deck access where you don't want to yank up a perfectly good deck: consider installing one or two of the round screw-cover access ports that fit almost flush. they come in at least 4, 6, and 8" and i suspect any would let you get your hand with a nut/washer down to the back side (ie, inside) of the transom. fleebay may be the cheapest source for these.

The 18 SS I had for two years and sold to Bro inlaw, has manually adjusted tabs on it that were put on with 8 SS screws, (2 Rows of 4) I resealed them with 4200 and never had a problem and either has the BIL. I think if they were Smart tabs or one of the other higher end brands there could be a problem.

the access ports would be the cats meow except the darn floatation foam butts up to the transom in the area I would need to get to. Think I will give lenco a holler tomorrrow and see what they suggest.

Re: trim tabs on 22' Islander

My question is why trim tabs on your Islander? I am curious as I have a 1983 22' Islander and I get all the trim I need from the outdrive itself. My fuel tank is mounted amidships, only the dual batteries and a 9.9 kicker motor is all that is in the stern along with the 3.0. My thought would be to see if some weight distribution may be in order rather than drilling all those holes. If your stern is really that heavy that tabs are in order, my personal thought would be weight distribution.. just a suggestion here............
