Re: Trim+tilt 88 Force 85hp

people are using carb needles from briggs and stratton. I think it is a short term fix and would be surprised it it lasted more than 3-4 seasons. But, then again, a lot of the old boats aren't going to last 3-4 seasons either.

I don't think there is any other. You may try boats.net and see if they can get you a pair of part # F17620

its nice to know how to rebuild these units, been there, and save yourself the time, money and headaches and see the guy under "force tilt trim" on Ebay who does the mail in rebuild. it gets done right, it has a warranty, and he uses better quality seals and o rings than you will get in the Mercury kit.
a deal at $119.

Motors? I thought he wanted the pump (aka valve body).

1972-1987 motors may or may not be worth fixing. I can get the chinese motors for like $90. They aren't as well built as the original but for $90 it gets real hard to justify spending too much time doing a rebuild. The core needs to be super clean.

1988-1992 motors are always worth rebuilding if the magnets are good. Mercury sells the brushes, springs, through bolt kits, gaskets, and lower bearings. The oil seal is a standard automotive part if you need it. If the armature has rust spots then places like grainger sell a SS sheath that fits over existing shaft and covers up the pits. The bearing and seal faces need to be smooth. A 2w motor rebuild varies from $49 to $149. Take it to a auto starter place and let them know you want a waterproof motor that does not have any rust on the inside. Most rust cleans up really well with a bead blasting and an acid dip. Follow it up with a conversion coat and a paint job. You'll end up with a better motor for less $$.

Re: Trim+tilt 88 Force 85hp

Your right I needed the pump rebuild parts not the motor.
I've had some experience with these outboards. But need to make sure I know what I'm getting into.
I have twin 88/85Forces.
Port will trim up and gradually drift down to the tilt where it holds. The stbd. motor works up and down but drifts slowly down to the trim holds for a while but real slowly goes down all the way.J

learn to live with it until you are ready to buy new. If your time is worth more than $10 per hour then the valve body isn't worth digging into.
